No such thing as an excuse

Well the title kind of says alot but as I walk on the treadmill this morning thinking about all the hurdles I’ve had to jump over I think about people’s excuses and they make me mad. Don’t get me wrong people are untitled to their opinion but if you say your going to do something do it.
I was an avid marathon runner, lost 65 pounds, found out I had compartment syndrome and excess scar tissue had surgery, recovered a year later to find out in my check up that I have a tumor in my ankle and a torn unrepairable ligament in the other side of that ankle. Those are my excuses to acting crazy sometimes but never an excuse to lay in bed and not enjoy an active lifestyle. I may not be able to run, climb stairs and do calf raises for the rest of my life but damn it I won’t let an excuse be more important than my need for health. You shouldn’t either! There are no excuses worth being excused and if you truly wanted it bad enough there would be no I’ll start tomorrow only I will start today.

Body Fat Percentage

I came across this photo on someone’s Facebook page and it stirred up some feelings.

First off is it really that realistic? Each one of these ladies is most likely a different height so comparing yourself could be hard. However at least you can get an idea between 30% and 18%.
It is a lot easier for a male to lower his body weight because men’s bodies aren’t programmed to store fat. Women’s however are, we have it in our genes to store fat for child birth. Since carrying a baby and requires a certain amount of abdominal fat. When a woman goes below her threshold she stops having her period and stops ovulating therefore her body says nope not going to happen, we’re not healthy enough to carry a baby!!
That might be TMI but it’s the truth backed by science. ( don’t believe me look it up here )
In my experience when I was at my most hardcore I was obsessed with the fat calipers and measurements tracking ever change in decimal points. Looking back its not worth it to obsess. Tracking your body fat percentage can be good to do a few times a year to have a reality check in, or when starting a new exercise routine. Also remember that no matter male or female every body is different and 18% on someone else won’t be the same as 18% on you.
Do any of you track your percentage?
If so have you ever had the water immersion test done?

Yoga to relax

So I just spent the good part of the last hour writing this wonderful post about cheese and the health benefits and even a list of cheeses in order of calories lowest to highest. Well I saved it 100x over and it kept defaulting back to my draft.
In anger and rage over this I have decided to do a night time session of yoga. Will this post even work? Am I writing it on vain too? Stay tuned… I’m publishing this than adding too it after my awesome and hopeful stress relieving yoga session.

Omg I’m back and I do feel better, I didn’t even smash my phone in a rage over my inability to post about cheese. Anyways…. I did my Nike Training Club workout.

And it was great 45 minutes of yoga. Finished it and now I’m super close to a new Nike reward. The thing that I never liked about working out at night is the hunger after, 45 minutes of yoga made me indulge in a bowl of Cheerios. Although it is better than going to bed hungry. Give NTC a try if u have a smart phone it’s awesome.

Use the Stairs, Save the Planet

I came across a study that was done by a major hospital that I found particularly interesting. How many times were you running late for work and said “oh, I should just take the stairs or I will be late?”

This study was done at a hospital and timed employees to see what was faster. 14 trips walking up and down the stairs took 10 minutes. 14 trips taking the elevator took 25 minutes.

Even two flights of stairs climbed per day can lead to 2.7 kg(6 pounds) weight loss over one year.

Not only is it good for you its great for the environment  by reducing your carbon footprint?  If you were to walk up and down 3 flights of stairs instead of an elevator, it would save 15 Wh a day or 450 Wh a month. Enough to power a Plasma TV for 3 hours. How much electricity does an elevator consume? Per round trip (8 floors): 40 Wh which is enough to run a desktop computer & monitor for 12-15 minutes. On average an individual generates about 6.5 kg of carbon emissions per year by taking the elevator. That works out to half a metric TON of carbon emissions over a lifetime.  (Brownell, Stunkard, and Albaum, 1980).

How do I get abs?

How hard is it to get abs? Or easy? Can I get it in a pill?

A crazy twisting contraption that I can order from t.v?

We all want at the very least a sexy flat stomach but how realistic is it?
Like this?

Or this?

Truth is unless you are blessed in the genetic gene pool it takes alot of hard work and an almost perfect diet. Also how often do you see girls with a 6 pack like this at the beach? Do you know that these girls either nutrient deprive before a photo shoot? Or have such a low percentage of body fat that it’s bordering dangerous? It is false advertising. I have amazing abs first thing in the morning but as soon as I have my coffee and water there gone.
If you want abs it’s not just cardio, crunches and eating healthy it’s also giving up things that contribute to your overall health. Is giving up fruit and some veggies really worth it?
What about this picture? With steps to do it?

This picture is actually more realistic this is attainable and so is a flat stomach. The secret to a great stomach is balance of all things, maybe I’m sounding negative but I’m trying to set the stage so you don’t feel like a failure.
Just be you and be healthy! Abs or a tight toned tummy or a flat tummy will all come with being true to your body.

There’s an ap for that

There are so many fitness aps out there, how does one choose? Well through trial and error I have found my favorite. NTC Nike Training Club.
It is absolutely fantastic with timed workouts, pictures, unlock able recipes and star workouts so you feel like its a game.
I have always liked Nike Women and what their product represents! It’s not about being pretty its about being tough! Making clothes that will withstand a beating a race, a WOD, gym and even yoga.
I have included some pics of the ap so you can see it, did I mention it’s free with no ads?
Love this ap. what do you use?
