The Trouble with Flavoured Waters

Water is water right? Well recently I was asked to dissect flavoured waters, are they really that great? What ingredients are in them. When you’re in doubt about a food healthy nature ask yourself this question “how”? How is it made, how does the flavour stay? if this was real fruit how does it stay fresh?

Here is what I found on my research of Aquafina Raspberry Flavour Splash < Sorry I had to pick on someone.

Filtered Water: Tap water put through a filtering process.
Natural Flavours: This is good, but again how do these natural flavours stay fresh?
Citric Acid:  Citric acid is an  organic acid. It is a natural preservative and is also used to add an acidic taste to foods and drinks (This is how you would still taste the raspberry)
Sodium Hexametaphosphate:  Stops the heavy particles in the bottle from making a silt in the bottom. It is also used in production of ceramic ware.
Phosphoric Acid:  Phosphoric acid is used to acidify foods and beverages such as various pops. It also have a lot of controversy regarding its health effects. It provides a tangy or sour taste and, being a mass-produced chemical, is available cheaply and in large quantities. It is also commonly used as a rust remover because it stops water from condensation.
Sodium Benzoate: Sodium benzoate is a preservative. It is used for stopping bacteria growth and fungus. It is also used in fireworks as a fuel in noise makers, a powder that emits a whistling noise when compressed into a tube and ignited. It is also used as a fuel that is also one of the fastest burning rocket fuels and provides a lot of thrust and smoke.
Sodium Citrate: Fancy word for salt. Why is there salt in your water?
Sucralose(Splenda): Self explanatory and not without its health effects.
Calcium Disodium EDTA: Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid is widely used to dissolve limescale (So there isn’t a film in the bottle). It is widely used to prevent metal ion impurities from modifying colours of dyed products. ie: If the water has a high copper content, stuff wont turn green.

So why would you drink this? Is it even water anymore, and how can Coca Cola (that’s who owns Aquafina) sell this as water? Its time to know what you’re putting into your bodies and make decisions on staying chemical free.

  1. i make my own flavored water with real fruit or one of my favs cucumber with mint. I make it fresh every couple of days cause we can’t stop drinking it!

  3. Good!! Stick with tap in re-usable bottles. So much better for the planet too!!

  4. Sarah! Good job, it is so much healthier. I really enjoy cut up pineapple in my water, One cube stays in my water bottle all day.
